Is CBD Safe?

Is it safe? is the right first question about anything you put on or in your body. Here's how I'd answer it for CBD, as plainly as I can.

The short answer

For most adults, topical CBD is considered low-risk. The World Health Organization reviewed the evidence in 2018 and found that CBD is generally well tolerated and doesn't show signs of abuse or dependence potential. That's a meaningful statement from a cautious body.

It's not the same as saying CBD is safe for everyone, in every form, at every amount. So let me give you the longer answer.

Topical versus ingested

The lotion and oil we make are topical. They're applied to the skin and mostly stay there. That matters, because the safety questions that come up most with CBD, especially around medications, are about CBD in the bloodstream: tinctures, capsules, gummies.

With a topical, very little reaches the bloodstream. That's why side effects from CBD lotion are rare and usually limited to skin sensitivity: a little redness, an itch. If that happens, stop using it. If it doesn't clear up, see your doctor.

When to check with a doctor first

Please talk with your physician or pharmacist before using any CBD product, topical or otherwise, if:

  • You take medication. CBD is processed by the same liver enzymes as many common drugs, and in ingested forms it can change how those drugs are metabolized. Blood thinners, some seizure medications, and some antidepressants are the ones most often mentioned. Your pharmacist can tell you whether this matters for you.
  • You're pregnant or nursing. There isn't enough research to say it's safe, so the cautious answer is to wait.
  • You have a skin condition or a history of reactions to skincare products. Try a small patch first.

I'm a counselor and a bodyworker. I'm not the right person to answer medical questions about your situation, and I'll always say so.

Why THC matters

Some CBD products contain small amounts of THC, the compound in cannabis that produces a high. Legally, hemp products can have up to 0.3%. For most people that's negligible. For someone who is drug-tested for work, or who simply wants to avoid THC entirely, it isn't.

Ours are made with a 0% THC extract. If you use a product from somewhere else, check the Certificate of Analysis. It should list the THC content on the first page.

How to use topicals sensibly

Start with a small amount on a small area. Wait a day. If your skin is happy, use more. Keep it off broken skin and out of your eyes. Store it somewhere cool.

That's it. No dosing charts, because a topical isn't a medicine and I won't pretend it is.

If you have questions about our products specifically, I'm easy to reach. If you have questions about your health, your doctor is the right call, and I'll be glad you made it.
